Contracting Bipartite Graphs to Paths and Cycles

Testing if a given graph G contains the k-vertex path Pk as a minor or as an induced minor is trivial for every fixed integer k ≥ 1. However, the situation changes for the problem of checking if a graph can be modified into Pk by using only edge contractions. In this case the problem is known to be NP-complete even if k = 4. This led to an intensive investigation for testing contractibility on ...

Unfolding a Face: From Singular to Manifold

Face recognition from a single image remains an important task in many practical applications and a significant research challenge. Some of the challenges are inherent to the problem, for example due to changing lighting conditions. Others, no less significant, are of a practical nature – face recognition algorithms cannot be assumed to operate on perfect data, but rather often on data that has...

Modelling Molecular Motors as Folding-Unfolding Cycles

We propose a model for motor proteins based on a hierarchical Hamiltonian that we have previously introduced to describe protein folding. The proposed motor model has high efficiency and is consistent with a linear load-velocity response. The main improvement with respect to previous models is that this description suggests a connection between folding and function of allosteric proteins. An im...

Inclination-flips in the Unfolding of a Singular Heteroclinic Cycle

We study bifurcations from a singular heteroclinic cycle in R 3. This heteroclinic cycle contains a hyperbolic singularity and a saddle-node. At the saddle-node, the linearized vector eld has two complex conjugate eigenvalues in addition to an eigenvalue 0. This implies the existence of a cascade of inclination-ip homoclinic bifurcations to the heteroclinic bifurcation.

Lost in Propagation? Unfolding News Cycles from the Source

The news media play an important role in informing the public on current events. Yet it has been difficult to understand the comprehensiveness of news media coverage on an event and how the reactions that the coverage evokes may diverge, because this requires identifying the origin of an event and tracing the information all the way to individuals who consume the news. In this work, we pinpoint...
